Genesis 1

Do bear with me, I'm quite new at all of this. The bible excerpt is at the end, I did not choose one verse but the entire chapter, as it kind of all spoke to me.

This reminds me of the praise for God in Psalms. God did such a miraculous thing, creating the heavens and the Earth from nothing.

He created the earth in 6 days but also, what is 6 days to God? I wonder if it is more than 6 days. We do not know for sure, but we cannot question Him, more just glorify Him for His creation.

Also as mothers, creation should really speak to us all. We are not God, but we have been blessed (well, most of us, prayers for those unable) to create life inside of us. Somehow God works inside us and creates each microscopic blood vessel and cell, all to create, well, life. If we were to mix up the elements that make man, cells, whatever, we'd get a pile of mush and not a living human being, Only through Him can this be done, and what a miracle it is. Just think how each cell, atom, hair, all that came together inside us, a fetus, then a live baby, perfect in His image. Science might try and explain the "how" of creation, but again we cannot as humans create from the basic ingredients of life, only He can. And science can certainly not explain the WHY. Why is a sunset so gorgeous,a flower so pretty, a bee can just as easily gather pollen from a red ugly blob as a gorgeous rose, a sunset can just be....a sun, setting, but we were given eyes to see the colors and a brain to appreciate it. When you look at a newborn baby, a flower, a sunset, see His glory and know He made us so we could appreciate His glory all around us.

How do you see His Glory? How does the story of creation speak to you?

Book of Genesis Chapter 1 - from the New International Version1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day.6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning--the second day.9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning--the third day.14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day.20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day.24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."27 So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them.28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.

Your interpretation is very powerful. I agree with you that science can easily explain physical composition, but what about the mind, soul, and/or spiritual self? There has actually been scientific evidence of neuronal activity in the frontal lobe of the brain during prayer and meditation. This should be proof enough of God's existence, or the effect of spirituality on the mind. This activity is comparable to the effects of drugs on the mind, which is sad if you think about the fact that many people turn to man-made drugs to feel good when all they need is God, the most natural "high."

God has created all of the natural beauty around us, that which makes us feel best and puts us in a heavenly place. I believe that it is the "science of man" that is constantly building over nature, yearning for bigger and better, when the best is already apparent in God's masterpiece. I live in New York City and see buildings everyday, but it is not until I leave the city and see some nature (I love green trees and rivers), that I can truly take in God's work of art. I know that man has provided us with many useful tools, but nothing beats God's perfect creation.

It is funny that you mentioned tiny blood vessels because I actually look at the tiny veins on my son's eyelids, and am amazed to imagine all of his inner workings that were developing inside of me for so long. He is truly a child of God, as are all babies, children, and adults. Sometimes we travel so far from God that we forget we ourselves are his children and perfect beings.

As far as God creating the Earth in six days... I believe that it is up to our own interpretation. I think that is a very good question. Here are some Bible quotes that came to my husband's mind based on your question...

2 Peter 3:8 states, "But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day." - (NASB)

Psalm 90 Verse 4 states, "For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by." - (NASB)

If God could see our entire lifetime and everything that was to occur, I believe that he foresaw how we would interpret the time he spent as six days of work and one day of rest. In reality, it could have been six thousand years or more! Six billion even! I can only pray for Godly patience, or anything remotely close to that. Our society is filled with quick fixes and globalization is becoming more and more extreme. This reminds me to pray for patience in following God's will for me in my life rather than making impulsive decisions that are not in God's plan.

  2. Hey there, wow where to begin I'm new at this also.
I have read and pondered a little over Genesis chapter 1 today, For me a few verses lingered in my mind firstly was-
2,Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
I am wondering about the darkness over the surface of the deep, and then it says the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters....
I have read that the Spirit of God is like that of a Mother caring over her young, however regardless it just reinforces the fact that the Holy Spirit of God was involved in creation also.
Of course we read in John 1, In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God and as we read on in John we see that the word is Jesus Christ himself and he became flesh and dwelt amongst us.
Thus showing God the son's inclusion in creation also -'nothing was created except through him.
So God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit were all there at the creation.
In verse 26 we also read-
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Again we read 'Let us' so is this us God, the Son and the Holy Spirit?
    I think so.
But what is God meaning when he says 'in our own image?'
What about us is in the image of God?
(I'm just letting my fingers do the typing hope that's ok?)
We should be honoured that we are made in God's image, but how is that possible when we are all different?
Well I suppose we have to examine what is the unifying factor in our lives that makes us all the same?
I would have to say that deep down we long for love, I think seeking love- true love, perfect love is at the root of all of our hearts desires and unifies us all as one. This is blatantly the core characteristic of God, it is the foundation of God in my opinion and it is God's perfect love that completes us and makes us feel at peace. I suppose we only truly experience this love when we are right with God, it is almost like when sin entered creation, we were spoilt and it is the Love of God that heals us and makes us right again.
How do we find that love in the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
When we look to the cross.
In this God demonstrated his love for us, while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
I realize I have totally drifted off subject here, but I believe God's Precious Holy word, is not one dimensional but more a holistic word that is multi-faceted with many layers and it all works beautifully together.

  3. heres the rest of it...

So we are made in God's own image through our need and ability to give and receive love, but also in other spiritual characteristics such as -
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (as we read in Galatians 5:22-23)
The Greatest of these is Love, God is Love and we are his created beings of Love.
Finally God is our divine creator, he created all things including us which as stated above is the most awesome thing, and as a mother to share in the gift of creation is so amazing. We are blessed by God to have the ability to grow a tiny person, a baby within our womb and looking at this in detail only blows away your mind seeing how a seemingly tiny seed grows into a living breathing child and then to watch them grow into an adult.
For us our little one is now 10 months old, and I keep looking at her hands watching them grow bigger and bigger and it never ceases to amaze me how miraculous this gift truly is.
Then I think of Mary as she felt her first child from within and then as he was born to be the Messiah.
She then also watched her little one grow, she watched his hands grow bigger and bigger until one day those loving hands were nailed to a cross.
    How she must have felt?
This man was once a child from within her womb, but was now hanging on a cross for the sins of the world- that included her own!
Well Praise be to God that Jesus died for us.
Thank you Father God for blessing us with the ability to share in creation and thank you God for Jesus and his saving work on the cross.
May we share in your true and perfect love all the days of our loves and give this to others also that they may seek you out.
Let us be at peace with the creation, let us not strive to understand Godly matters but be at peace that you are in control.
    Amen

I don't need all the answers, I just have to rest in God and his ultimate divine control over all things.

Well that's all from me, my fingers are tired and so is my body.
Thanks for letting me join in.
